Coppertone introduce d the first consumer sunless tanning lotion into the marketplace in the 1960's. This product was called "Quick Tan" or
"QT®". It was sold as an overnight tanning agent. Many other companies also introduced similar versions of this product. Unfortunately, the results were not as expected. The typical user complained about orange palms, streaking, and very poor coloration. This experience left a
mental scar in the minds of most consumers. People today still
associate sunless tanning with fake looking orange tans. The coloring
ingredient in these products was and is still recognized today as DHA
(dihydroxyacetone).
